Kidney Cancer Types

Some of the most common types of kidney cancer are:

  • Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer in  pcmc adults, accounting for approximately 85% of diagnoses. This type of cancer develops in the proximal renal tubules, which make up the kidney’s filtration system. There are thousands of these tiny filtering units in each kidney.
  • Urothelial carcinoma. This is also known as transitional cell carcinoma. It accounts for 5% to 10% of kidney cancers diagnosed in adults. Urothelial carcinoma begins in the area of the kidney where urine collects before going to the bladder, called the renal pelvis. This type of kidney cancer is treated as bladder cancer because both types of cancer start in the same cells that line the renal pelvis and bladder.
  • Renal sarcomas are rare. This type of cancer develops in the soft tissues of the kidney; the thin layer of connective tissue that surrounds the kidney, called the capsule; or surrounding fat. Kidney sarcomas are usually treated surgically. However, the sarcoma often comes back in the kidney area or spreads to other parts of the body. After the first surgery, multiple surgeries or chemotherapy may be recommended.
  • Wilms tumor. Wilms tumor is more common in children and is treated differently than kidney cancer in adults. Wilms tumors make up about 1% of kidney cancers. This type of cancer is more likely to be successfully treated with radiation and chemotherapy than other types of kidney cancer surgery combined with surgery. This led to a different approach to treatment.
  • Lymphoma can enlarge both kidneys and is associated with enlarged lymph nodes, called lymphadenopathies, in other parts of the body, including the neck, chest, and abdominal cavity. In rare cases, renal lymphoma may appear as a single tumor mass within the kidney and may include enlarged regional lymph nodes. If lymphoma is a possibility, your doctor may take a biopsy (see Diagnosis) and recommend chemotherapy instead of surgery.

What are common types of Kidney cancer?

The best option to cure kidney cancer is the removal of the tumor with surgery.

Kidney treatment usually begins with surgery to remove the cancer. For cancers confined to the kidneys, this may be the only treatment needed. If the cancer has spread beyond the kidneys, further treatments may be recommended.

Together, you and your kidney cancer doctor can discuss kidney treatment options. The best approach for you may depend on a number of factors, including your general health, the type of kidney cancer you have, whether the cancer has spread, and your treatment preferences.
